What is Dysport?
Similar to Botox, Dysport has the ability to weaken the muscles causing many of the wrinkles and creases on the face. Dysport is injected directly into the areas of the face that need smoothing. The treatment is used to treat glabellar lines, or “11s”, the frown lines found between the eyebrows. It is also used for ‘crows feet” or laugh lines.
How does Dysport work?
Through a single injection placed directly into the areas above the eyebrows, Dysport is able to block nerve signals to the muscles. This results in a complete reduction of muscle activity, preventing those muscles from contracting to form frown lines and wrinkles. Although it causes temporary muscle weakness in the targeted muscle or muscles, it rarely affects surrounding muscles, so your facial expressions are not impacted, leaving a natural look.
What can I expect from a Dysport procedure?
Prior to the injections, the treatment site will be cleansed with an antiseptic to prevent infection. Depending on the patient, the area may be numbed with lidocaine or a numbing cream to eliminate the minor pain of the injections. The injection sites look slightly puffy for an hour or so. Small bruises can sometimes be seen at the injection site, especially in patients taking aspirin, motrin, or ibuprofen in the ten days prior to treatment. Dr. Price recommends stopping these medications as well as other blood thinners two weeks beforehand to minimize the risk of visible bruising.
*What results can I expect from a Dysport treatment?
Significant results will be seen from one to two days after your injections. Typically, results last up to five months. Although the treatment can significantly reduce signs of aging in the forehead, it is important for patients to understand that the outcome can vary with each inidividual patient.
What side effects can I expect from a Dysport treatment?
Minor and temporary swelling at the injection site for a few hours is not unusual. Visible bruising is less common, but can occur as noted above. Complications such as infection, headache, temporary eyelid drooping, or upper respiratory symptoms have been reported, but are very rare.
