7 reasons why you should consider a breast augmentation

Breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States, and for good reason. No matter their reason for going under the knife, women find many benefits to this surgery, including improved contours and self-esteem.

Here are seven reasons why you should consider a breast augmentation.

  • Your breasts didn’t develop. Some women have a condition called micromastia, which is when their breasts failed to develop as they should during puberty. This can affect one or both breasts, making women feel self-conscious.
  • You’ve experienced pregnancy or lost a significant amount of weight. Pregnancy and fluctuations in weight can do a number on the volume and perky appearance of your breasts. A breast augmentation may be performed with a breast lift to “lift” the breasts into a more youthful position.
  • One breast is a different size than the other. Breast augmentation surgery can address asymmetry in breasts. Not only does this look bother some women, but it can make it more difficult to shop for bras or tops that fit properly.
  • You’ve had a mastectomy. If you’ve undergone a mastectomy to treat breast cancer, a breast augmentation is part of the reconstruction process to help restore the normal look and feel of your breasts.
  • You can change the shape and size of the areola. The areola is the pigmented area of the skin that surrounds your nipple. During breast augmentation surgery, Dr. Price can change the size and shape of your areolae to a size that’s more in proportion with the size of your breasts.
  • You want to improve self-esteem. Breast enhancement surgery has been linked to significant improvement in self-esteem.
  • It can be performed with other procedures. A breast augmentation may be done with other body contouring procedures such as liposuction and tummy tuck for what’s called a mommy makeover. A body lift may be done to help patients who have reached a weight loss goal.

While breast augmentation surgery comes with numerous benefits to the patient, it’s important that you make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and not being influenced by others. If you’re interested in learning more, (203) 453-6635 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Price.

5 things you should know about eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates because of the rejuvenating results it provides to patients who have concerns about their tired- or sad-looking eyes.

Here are five things you should know about eyelid surgery and what you should consider before going under the knife.

  1. Eyelid surgery is usually performed on both upper eyelids and lower eyelids. On upper eyelids, surgery removes or repositions fat deposits, tightens muscles and removes excess skin. On lower eyelids, excess skin in the lower eyelid is removed while excess fat is removed or repositioned for desired results.
  2. Eyelid surgery can improve vision. While surgery is most often done for cosmetic reasons, eyelid surgery can help improve vision by correctly sagging upper eyelids that hag over the eye, impairing vision.
  3. Incisions can be easily hidden. The beauty of eyelid surgery is the fact that the incisions on the upper eyelid can be hidden by the natural crease in the lid, which means the resulting scar will fade and difficult to see once you’ve healed. On the lower eyelid, incisions are designed to be hidden as well as they are made at or just below the lower lash line.
  4. You should see results right away, but it will take time to see full results after swelling and bruising subside. Full results may take a few months as you continue to heal.
  5. There is little pain involved with this surgery. You can expect to experience some swelling and bruising and discomfort around your eyelids after surgery such as sensitivity to light or blurred vision from ointment. Use lubricating ointment, cold compresses and pain medication as instructed. It’s important that you follow the post-operative instructions closely to help with recovery and healing and to achieve optimal results.

Results from eyelid surgery are long-lasting. If you are interested in seeing if you are a candidate for eyelid surgery, call (203) 453-6635 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Price.

Take years off your face with brow lift surgery

BrowliftAs we age, the skin loses its elasticity, causing wrinkles and creases to form in the forehead and cause the brows to sag. This often leads to a tired- or angry-looking appearance. If you’re thinking about a brow lift or forehead lift to attain a more youthful appearance, read on for facts about this surgery and the different approaches to help you achieve your ideal results.

What is a brow lift?

Brow lift surgery removes or alters the muscles above your eyes to smooth lines and wrinkles and raise the eyebrows for a more youthful appearance. There are two different methods. The endoscopic brow lift is the preferred method as it makes for easier recovery and invisible scarring. Three to five incisions are made within the hairline. A tiny instrument with a camera on the end is inserted into one of the incisions to help provide visuals and guides the other tools that are inserted through the other tiny incisions to manipulate the skin and muscles.

A coronal brow lift is a traditional brow lift that consists of making one long incision that runs from one ear, wraps around the forehead, and ends at the other ear. The forehead skin is lifted away, while underlying muscles are trimmed and repositioned. Eyebrows can be lifted at this time as well. Excess skin is trimmed and the remaining skin is re-draped before closing the incision. The incision and resulting scars are hidden in the hairline.

Ideal candidates

Brow lift patients are usually between the ages of 40 and 60 and are unhappy with the sagging skin and lines on their foreheads. If you have horizontal lines across your forehead, you would be a good candidate for surgery. If you have vertical lines between your eyebrows, also known as the “11” lines, or crow’s feet at the sides of your eyes, you are a candidate for brow lift surgery. Good candidates also have an overall sagging to their brows that make them appear tired or angry, even when they aren’t.

A simple test

Have you ever stood in front of a mirror and pulled the skin above the eyes up and away? Patients who are curious to know if they would benefit from a brow lift can perform this simple test. First, take the lower palms of your hands and place them above each eyebrow. Next, pull the palms up and away from your eyes. What you see is essentially what a brow lift would accomplish.

Frequently asked questions about liposuction

LiposuctionLiposuction is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures as it provides a slimmer, shapelier silhouette that patients desire. Liposuction can book confidence by helping you get rid of stubborn areas of fat that resist all your diet and exercise efforts.

Even though it’s one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries, many patients have questions about this treatment.

Am I a candidate for liposuction?

Good candidates for surgery are in good overall health and at or near their ideal weight. If you have stubborn fat pockets that won’t go away no matter how hard you try with diet and exercise, you would be a good candidate. You should have a visible bulge where at least an inch can be pinched in the area that will be treated.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction surgery consists of inserting small, thin cannulas through tiny incisions in the skin. These cannulas are moved under the skin to target certain fat deposits, and then the fat is suctioned out of the body through these cannulas.

What areas of the body can be treated?

The most common place on the body is the abdomen as that fat is the most resistant to diet and exercise. This is often done in combination with a tummy tuck for body contouring. Liposuction can remove fat deposits in the face and neck area, namely the cheeks, jowls, and chin. This is often done in combination with other rejuvenation procedures. Other areas of the body that can be treated with liposuction include the thighs and buttocks, hips and back, arms, knees and calves, and breast area.

How long do results last?

Liposuction removes targeted fat permanently. But it is possible to gain the weight back with new fat cells. It’s important to follow a healthy exercise program and diet to maintain your results. Eat lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Stick to low-fat dairy products.

Liposuction is often done in combination with other procedures to help a patient achieve the desired look. To learn more about liposuction and if it’s right for you, call (203) 453-6635 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Price.

An alternative to traditional face lift

For years, if men and women have wanted to rejuvenate their appearance by tightening lose skin and getting rid of extra folds of skin beneath the chin, they would have to turn to a standard, “full” face lift. Today, you can get a mini facelift, or “celebrity lift,” which offers many benefits over a standard face lift. Read on to learn more about the mini facelift.

The Mini Facelift

A mini facelift consists of making a short incision at the hairline in front of the ear. This incision extends down into the crease between the ear and the cheek. The skin in front of the ear is pulled upward and outward so that the thin, deeper muscle layer can be lifted into a more youthful position. Once the skin and underlying muscles are in their new position, they are sutured into place with permanent sutures. The extra skin is trimmed, hiding the incision where the cheek and ear meet.

Benefits

A mini facelift comes with many benefits over a traditional facelift. First, the surgery requires local anesthesia or IV sedation, not general anesthesia. No bandages are necessary. And the surgery takes 60-90 minutes.

As far as results, a mini lift enhances a patient’s natural facial contours, offering significant results so the patient still looks completely natural.

Recovery

A mini or celebrity facelift offers many benefits over a standard facelift, including a faster recovery, shorter incisions and less overall cost. Patients will notice minimal or no pain, and no dressings are needed. Sutures are removed five days after surgery. You will have restrictions on activities for about two weeks as lifting, pulling and pushing should be avoided.

Results

Results are immediate and will continue to improve over time. While your face will continue to age, your results are permanent. Some patients may choose to undergo a second surgery to restore their results five years later.

If you want to restore definition to your jaw, remove sagging and wrinkles around your lower cheeks and jaw and give your face a more rejuvenated appearance with a mini facelift, call (203) 453-6635 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Price.

New Year, New You: Time for a Mommy Makeover?

The New Year is almost upon us. It’s a time for reflection and a time when many of us make plans for positive changes in our lives. If you’re done with childbearing and are unhappy with the changes in your body from pregnancy and childbirth, then you may have been thinking about surgery to improve your contours. A Mommy Makeover is a popular all-in-one plastic surgery that helps moms who long for their pre-pregnancy body to feel more comfortable and confident. Read on to learn if a Mommy Makeover is right for you.

What it is

A Mommy Makeover is a popular surgery for moms and even women who haven’t had children but have unwanted changes to their body from weight fluctuations and want to tackle multiple areas at once. It consists of multiple procedures in one operation, hospital visit and recovery period. It’s convenient and safer for those reasons.

Procedures

The most common procedures include a breast enhancement, tummy tuck and liposuction. Many women want a breast lift with breast augmentation, but some elect to undergo breast reduction surgery.

A tummy tuck will tighten underlying abdominal muscles that have been stretched after childbirth. Excess skin will be removed to achieve a flatter, firmer abdomen.

Liposuction will remove small fat deposits from different areas of the body to improve the overall contour and create a better figure. Often these are stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond well to diet and exercise alone.

Pre-op instructions

During your consultation, you will discuss pre-operative directions with Dr. Price. You’ll want to bring your medication list to your appointment and discuss what you’re taking as some medications can increase your risk for bleeding. Smoking can delay healing, so if you smoke, you’ll need to stop at least six weeks prior to surgery. You’ll want to arrange for someone to take you home after surgery and stay with you for the first day after surgery at least. If you have children, arrange for someone to care for them for the first several days as you’ll be prohibited from lifting, driving and cleaning.

If you are certain you are done having children, now may be the right time to consider surgery. To learn more about a Mommy Makeover and if it’s right for you, call (203) 453-6635 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Price.

Why cosmetic treatments for the eyes are all the rage right now

Chances are, you own a mask, or many. Mask-wearing has become a part of our daily lives as we do our part to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Between school, work, dining and shopping, masks have become mandatory in many cities across the country. With the increased wearing of masks, plastic surgeons are noticing an uptick in cosmetic surgical and non-surgical treatments to improve the appearance of the eyes. Read on to learn more about these popular treatments.

Eyelid surgery wakes up tired-looking eyes

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, has been a popular cosmetic treatment for years and for many reasons. Both men and women like the fact that the incisions are so small and placed in areas where the natural folds of the skin will hide the scar as it heals and fades. Recovery is not difficult, as there is minimal pain and fast healing. Visible bruising lasts 10-14 days.

Eyelid surgery can be done on upper eyelids and lower eyelids, depending on your concerns. This procedure treats the sagging, droopy skin of the upper eyelid that can impair vision. It removes excess fat that has accumulated in the eyelids, creating a puffy appearance. It also removes the bags under the eyes and improves the drooping and wrinkling in the area of the lower eyelids.

Botox softens and erases wrinkles

Botox is an effective wrinkle eraser that’s FDA-approved to improve the look of moderate-to-severe forehead lines, frown lines and laugh lines around the eyes. Botox tackles dynamic wrinkles on the upper third of the face caused by repeated facial expressions such as laughing, frowning or squinting. Botox temporarily blocks the nerve signal from reaching the facial muscle, which relaxes the wrinkle In the skin above.

Grow your eyelashes

Many women turn to false eyelashes, but the upkeep can be costly and damage their own real eyelashes over time. You can ditch false eyelashes for Latisse, which is the only FDA-approved treatment that is clinically proven to grow your lashes. Latisse is a once-nightly treatment available by prescription only. You swipe it across the base of your upper eyelashes at night, with results in about a month and full results in 16 weeks.

There is a variety of options to rejuvenate the appearance of your eyes and eye area. Call (203) 453-6635 to set up a consultation with Dr. Price.

Smooth out fine lines and wrinkles with no downtime

Cosmetic injectables are the most popular non-invasive cosmetic treatment, helping patients smooth out lines and wrinkles and enhance the results of surgical procedures such as a facelift or eyelid surgery. There are so many injectables to choose from, so how do you know which one is best for you? Read on to learn more about how Botox and dermal fillers can help you achieve the more youthful appearance you desire.

Botox

There are two types of wrinkles: Dynamic and static wrinkles. Botox works on dynamic wrinkles, which form on the skin above a contracting muscle such as when you frown or smile or laugh. Made of botulinum toxin type A, Botox is injected under the skin to temporarily and safely paralyze muscles to prevent them from contracting to form the wrinkle in the skin. The most common areas of treatment are the frown lines (known as the “11” lines) between the eyebrows, forehead lines and crow’s feet.

Botox treatment takes minutes and is virtually pain free. You’ll see full results in about 3-5 days. Results last about four months, at which time you’ll return for treatment to maintain results.

Dermal fillers

Botox treats dynamic wrinkles, but isn’t effective on the other type: static wrinkles. Static wrinkles are always present and are the result of the natural aging process and skin damage caused by other factors such as genetics, sun damage and lifestyle. Dermal fillers are designed to diminish fine lines and improve volume in various areas of the face. Juvederm is a popular dermal filler that is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. It binds with water molecules, adding volume, softness and radiance to the skin. Results are immediate and will last several months to over a year depending on the type of filler used.

Botox and dermal fillers can turn back time in a matter of minutes with little to no downtime. If you’re interested in a consultation to discuss what treatments would be best to tackle your concerns, call (203) 453-6635 to set up a consultation.

How do I choose between breast implants?

If you’ve been thinking about getting fuller, larger breasts, you know that you have many decisions when it comes to the size, shape and implant material. How do you decide? Read on to learn about the different options for breast implants.

Silicone or saline implants?

FDA-approved for women age 22 or older, silicone breast implants are the most popular because they consist of a gel that feels like natural breast tissue. In case of implant rupture, the gel may stay in the shell or leak into the implant pocket. You may not notice that it is leaking, which is why you have to visit your surgeon regularly to ensure the implants have maintained their structural integrity.

FDA-approved for women age 18 and older, saline implants are filled with sterile saltwater and inserted into the breast implant pocket before they are filled. This allows for smaller incisions and custom sizing during surgery. One of the biggest draws to saline implants is the fact that if there is a leak in the shell, the implant will collapse and the water will be naturally absorbed and expelled by the body. The IDEAL IMPLANT is another saline option that offers additional structure and shape.

How do I choose the right size?

With the aid of the Vectra 3D imaging system, Dr. Price can show you what your body would look like with different implant sizes. This helps you feel more comfortable and confident in making decisions about size as you plan surgery.

Where will the implants be placed?

There are two options for breast implant placement. The preferred method of placement is the submuscular implant placement. This consists of placing the implant beneath the pectoral muscle and above the chest wall to create a natural pocket. There is less of a chance for noticeable wrinkling or rippling with this placement, and it looks more natural.

The other placement type is the subglandular method. With subglandular placement, the breast implant is placed behind the breast tissue and in front of the pectoral muscle. This is recommended for women who have sagging but don’t want a breast lift.

If you’re ready to discuss breast augmentation and your options for implants, call (203) 453-6635 to set up a consultation with Dr. Price.

Should I get a tummy tuck?

Patients who have sagging skin and fat in their abdominal area may not want to “roll” with it. If you want to get rid of that extra roll or pooch, a tummy tuck may be right for you. But how do you know if you are a good candidate for surgery? Read on to learn more about tummy tuck surgery.

You understand this is not a substitute for weight loss. A good candidate is in good overall health, has tried diet and exercise to reduce the area, and is prepared to follow a healthy diet and exercise program after surgery to maintain results.

You’ve experienced pregnancy and childbirth. Pregnancy can stretch and separate abdominal muscles and stretch the skin, creating an “apron” of excess skin around the abdomen. A tummy tuck removes the excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens applicable abdominal muscles as well. If you’re planning on having more children, you may want to hold off on having a tummy tuck as it can negatively affect the results, requiring further surgery.

You’ve lost a significant amount of weight or had weight loss surgery. Men and women turn to a tummy tuck to remove the loose skin and stubborn fat pockets that diet and exercise alone can’t correct. Often, this is done for functional reasons as well, as the apron of skin hanging below the belly can present mobility problems and rashes or other concerns.

You’re addressing other concerns. A tummy tuck, liposuction and breast augmentation are part of the popular “Mommy Makeover” surgery to help women improve the appearance of their breasts, abdominal and other areas.

With a healthy lifestyle, the results from a tummy tuck surgery can last for many years. A consultation with Dr. Price will help you determine whether this popular procedure is right for you. To learn more about procedures that can help you achieve your desired results, call (203) 453-6635 to set up a consultation with Dr. Price.
