When a patient is considering undergoing a breast augmentation, there are many choices when it comes to implant type, size and placement. Here are seven things you should know about breast implants and their differences.

Silicone breast implants are the most popular implant type because they consist of a gel that feels most like natural breast tissue.
Silicone gel implants won’t collapse when ruptured or leaking, which is why you will need to see your surgeon regularly to ensure your implants are intact. If it ruptures, the gel may remain in the shell, but it could leak into the breast implant pocket without you knowing.
Saline implants consist of an outer silicone shell that are inserted into the breast implant pocket and then filled with sterile salt water. This allows for smaller incisions and custom sizing during surgery.
If a saline implant ruptures or leaks, the implant will collapse, and the patient will know right away. The body will naturally absorb and process the sterile salt water.
Silicone implants are FDA-approved for patients ages 22 and older, while saline implants are approved for patients 18 and older.

Silicone gel implants

Silicone gel implants feel most like natural breasts. They are made of a silicone outer shell filled with medical-grade silicone gel. These gelatin-like implants are FDA-approved for augmentation in women ages 22 and older. If the implant ruptures, the gel may remain in the shell or some of the silicone gel can leak into the breast pocket. In a perfect world, breast implants would last for your entire life, but that’s unfortunately not the case. Although silicone breast implants can last a really long time, you will likely need to have them done every 10 to 15 years. So, how exactly can you tell whether or not you need to have yours redone?

It’s Been Over 10 Years Since Your Last Breast Implant

On average, silicone breast implants last over 10 years. Although some patients can get a longer life out of their implants than others, it’s usually not until at least after a decade that we encourage parents to come back in and get their breasts redone; that way you cut down on potential problems from happening and you get perkier breasts in the process.

You Have a Leak

One of the trickiest parts about silicone breast implants is that they can be really hard to detect. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends that patients conduct regular self-exams and come in for checkups to make sure that their breasts are still intact. If you feel like your implants feel abnormal or if you haven’t had them check in a while, come into our office and Dr. Price will either examine them himself or order an MRI to make sure that there isn’t a leak.

Your Breast Plants Are Lopsided or Misshapen

Let’s take a closer look at three things to know about this type of implant and what makes it really ideal.

Ruptures Are Obvious

The FDA encourages patients who have silicone implants to get an MRI scan done every two years to detect any sort of ruptures or leaks. Because silicone is so thick, ruptures are often called silent ruptures because they often go entirely unnoticed. With the Ideal implant, patients will see a visible change right away because saline leaks very quickly. And, because saline is a form of saltwater, it’s harmless for your body to absorb.

There Are Many Layers

Traditionally, when you think of a breast implant, you think of one size sack that contains either saline or silicone. With the ideal implant, there are different chambers or layers within the implant. The inner shell around the inner chamber holds the inner saline filler, and the outer shell around the outer chamber holds the external saline filler. Then, between these shells are one to three baffle shells.
