Take care of your skin this summer!

Beautiful young latin woman applying suntan lotion at sea with copy space. After years of living a (hopefully) fun and productive life, it is inevitable that skin will get damaged – sun, wind, and the stress of life can take their toll. There are a variety of ways to treat skin blemishes and wrinkles and make skin look refreshed, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take good care of your skin, especially during these hot and sunny summer months.

Protect your skin

Spending time outside is good for you, both physically and mentally, and summer time means that there are lots of fun activities just waiting for you to do outside. Here are some tips for staying safe this summer:

• Stay indoors between 10 am and 4 pm, if possible. This is when the sun is at its strongest.

• Don’t forget the sunscreen! Even if it is a cloudy day, the sun’s rays can still cause damage to your skin. Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and reapply it often if you stay outside for long.

• For maximum protection, in addition to sunscreen, cover up with pants and a long sleeve shirt. A wide-brimmed hat will protect your skin and will also help to keep you cool.

• Protect your eyes as well, with sunglasses that block UV rays and cover the skin around the eyes.

• If you do want to tan, you should sunbathe for no more than 20 minutes a day.

Sun exposure increases the odds that you’ll get skin cancer, but, unfortunately, skin cancer can strike even if you don’t go outside very often. If you notice any spots or moles on your body that just don’t look right, see your doctor right away. Skin cancer is very treatable when it is caught early, but can be deadly if it is not.

Taking care of your skin and protecting it from the sun will help to keep it looking young and beautiful – and will help you to stay healthy, too. Skincare Secrets from a Plastic Surgeon

Skincare Advice from a Professional

The skin is widely regarded as the largest organ in the human body. It comes into contact with the sun, pollution, bacteria, and more. You know it needs extra care to keep it looking its best but what are the steps or products I absolutely need to be using? Here are some simple skin care tips from a professional to keep your skin looking younger and healthier.

First of all, always remove your makeup. No matter how tired you are! Effectively removing makeup is the key to clearer, healthier skin. When you remove your makeup, you give your skin a clean canvas for other skincare products. We recommend a gentle cleansing oil or wash as a first step to removing makeup. When it comes to skincare steps, it’s best to remember to layer products from thinnest to thickest. This means anything you use between cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.

Your diet affects the health of your skin. This shouldn’t come as a surprise but what you eat, does impact your overall skin health. Limiting dairy products and sugar is recommended for clearing up breakouts and other skin issues. Eating nutrient-rich vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are recommended for healthy skin.

The most important piece of advice is to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. If nothing else, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen every day, year-round, not just in the summer or when you know you’ll be spending time outside. Broad-spectrum sunscreens are designed to protect your skin from ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, which can cause direct and indirect cell and DNA damage. This cell and DNA damage impacts collagen, pigment, and cell reproduction which results in signs of aging including lines, discoloration, and an overall unhealthy appearance. Sunscreen also can prevent skin cancers. Don’t forget to reapply throughout the day too, no matter the weather.

With so many different skin types and skin goals, it’s hard to diagnose a “one size fits all” regimen, if you’d like a skincare routine tailored to you, give us a call and schedule a consultation with us today (203) 453-6635.

How to Treat a Sunburn While On Vacation

Treating SunburnGoing on a beach vacation is just about everyone’s idea of the perfect summer. If you have big plans to get to the beach and soak up some rays, don’t forget the sun protection. Even though SPF can protect your skin from skin cancer and sunburns, it’s not bulletproof. So, what can you do if you get a sunburn while you’re on vacation? Let’s take a closer look.

Skip the Sun

No, you don’t have to sit inside of your hotel room and mope if you have a sunburn, but we don’t encourage you to lay out in the sun either. Try to sit in the sade and wear some clothes to cover your sunburn. Remember that even though you might have to take a timeout for a few days, you will be healed up and back at it in no time.

Bring Aloe Vera

In addition to packing enough sunscreen with you on vacation, we always encourage our patients to bring a small thing of aloe vera. The acid in aloe vera has been proven to heal the skin a lot faster and soothe it. One of the great things about aloe vera is that a little bit of it can go a long way so you don’t have to haul a massive bottle with you on the airplane.

Try some ice or damp washcloths

Feel your sunburned skin. Does it feel hot to the touch? Burns tend to feel warm when you touch them. Try cooing your skin down with either something like an ice cube or a damp, cold washcloth. Both of these options will help soothe your skin and get rid of all of the heat. Plus, who doesn’t like to be cooled down when it’s scorching outside?

Calm down your skin after a sunburn and use these tips. If you want to learn more about how you can take better care of your skin during the summer, contact our Huntington office and call us at (631) 423-1000.

How to Dive Into 2019 With Better Skin

healthy skin, Guilford, CT

Having good skin isn’t something that necessarily comes naturally to a lot of people. If you want to have healthier skin throughout 2019, then we have a few tips for you. Whether it’s getting a procedure done or just investing in some skin care products, we have created a few tips for you to follow.

Start Botox

Botox is one of the most popular non-invasive treatments that we offer patients because it works by actually softening your muscles around your eyes and across your forehead. When the muscles have been softened it helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. In addition to softening fine lines and wrinkles, Botox can also be used preventatively. How? You get wrinkles when your face makes certain movements on a regular basis. When, however, your face is unable to make these movements then you are less likely to get wrinkles. One thing to remember about Botox though is that in order for it to work preventatively it needs to be done on a regular basis.

Start Fillers

Fillers work differently than Botox because they actually fill in fine lines and wrinkles while also adding volume to your cheeks and face. If you struggle with having uneven skin texture because of fine lines or if you feel like you have lost a lot of elasticity, then it may be time to start dermal fillers. During your initial consultation with Dr. price, he will go over which fillers he thinks will give you the best results.

Laser

From skin tone to texture, laser skin rejuvenation can treat a variety of different issues. If you want to really change your skin quality in 2019, then laser may be the ultimate way to do that.

Botox, fillers, and laser are just a few ways that you can get better-looking skin in 2019. If you want to learn a little bit more, contact our Guilford office and call us at (203) 453-6635.

Dreading that Time of the Month? How to Get Rid of Hormonal Acne

Skin Care Guilford, CTAs if menstrual cramps weren’t bad enough, getting hormonal acne on top of cramps is just plain cruel. If you suffer from hormonal acne and don’t even know where to begin to find some relief, Dr. Gary J. Price has a few helpful tips.

Start With Skin Care

If you haven’t already invested in some acne-fighting skin care, then that’s where you should start. Buy a face scrub, spot treatment, and cleanser that contain ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These two ingredients work to dry out your blemishes before they get worse. As a tip, start using these skin care products about a week before you know you’re going to start your period.

Get Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are another thing to get every month or so. Chemical peels work to get rid of acne-causing bacteria at the surface and help to prevent it from coming back. Speak with Dr. Price about what types of chemical peels you should get and how often you’ll need them.

Microdermabrasion

One of the worst parts about hormonal acne is the scars they leave each and every month. One method that Dr. Gary J. Price uses to get rid of acne scars is called the Parisian Peel Microdermabrasion which helps to get rid of a bunch of skin blemishes including acne scars.

If your hormonal acne is making you feel even more frustrated every month, let Dr. Gary J. Price help you find some relief. With a combination of skin care, chemical peels, and even microdermabrasion, he can help to stabilize the hormones in your skin.
