Your Sagging Neck – The 411

Well, the holidays are over and we’ve all had enough of turkey and egg nog. It’s time for some self-reflection. If your reflection whispers “turkey waddles” and your jiggly, waddly neck is causing you frustration, take heart, you are not alone. Our necks are one of the first places we show our age…saggy, loose skin shows up out of the blue and does nothing for our self-confidence.

neck lift surgery in guilford ctA popular cosmetic surgical procedure, the neck lift, also known as a cervicoplasty or platysmaplasty, is an appealing alternative to living with your waddles. A neck lift tightens the skin and underlying muscles of your neck and improves the contour of your jawline. During the procedure, an incision is made beginning at the level of the sideburns at the hairline and continues along the area around the ear, ending at the back of the hair. The neck skin is lifted and excess fat may be repositioned or sculpted to achieve optimum results. The neck muscle is tightened and the underlying neck tissues are repositioned.
As a less invasive alternative to a facelift, a neck lift can produce dramatic results.

Before surgery:
• Clarify your goals and your expectations.
• During your initial consultation, we will explain your options and go over your expectations.
• As with any surgery, you must be in good health. If you are a smoker, try to cut back, or better yet, quit.
• You will need to take time off work and arrange for help at home, if that is appropriate.
• Be sure to tell us any medications you take or any health concerns you may have.

After surgery:
• Improvement is noticeable within days of the surgery. Visible bruising and swelling gradually disappear, and most patients can resume social activities after two weeks.
• You should avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for a few weeks.
• Eat well, drink lots of water, take it easy, rest and pamper yourself.

Now is the perfect time to call for a consultation with Dr. Price…meet with him and let him explain more about this confidence-changing procedure: (203) 453-6635.

Your Self-Confidence And You – Dealing With Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia in Guilford CT & New Haven Dr. Gary PriceSelf-confidence, self-esteem – buzz words that define the way you feel about yourself – and they often affect your most personal relationships. If you are a guy dealing with abnormal breast enlargement (gynecomastia), physical intimacy and even some sports activities may be emotionally challenging and embarrassing. Maybe you’ve tried rigorous exercise and dieting in hopes of changing the size of your breasts, but have not found them to be effective solutions.

Gynecomastia is the condition of enlarged breasts in men which can occur at any age. It is characterized by excess localized fat and glandular tissue that can be present in one or both breasts. The symptoms are tenderness and swelling of the breast tissue. Gynecomastia is influenced by a variety of causes including diet, aging, hormones, puberty, obesity and the use of some medications or steroids.

Gynecomastia isn’t a serious problem, but it can be difficult to cope with.

The good news? There is a surgical option.

  • Correcting gynecomastia involves a specialized surgery that reduces breast size, thereby flattening and enhancing the contours of the chest. This surgery is also called a “reduction mammaplasty.

If you are physically healthy, your breast development has stabilized and you are embarrassed by the size of your breasts, you would be a good candidate for surgery.

  • The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure, using tiny incisions and is usually done without general anesthesia. The condition can sometimes be improved with liposuction alone. Dr. Price will give you instructions for caring for your incisions and the healing process. It is important that your incisions are not subjected to excessive force or motion during healing.
  • During your consultation, be sure to ask Dr. Price any questions you may have about what you can expect during your recovery period.
  • Results are immediately visible and most patients return to work four or five days after surgery, however, several days of discomfort requiring pain medication is normal.

Feel good about yourself…take off your shirt with confidence.

Open Your Beautiful Eyes To Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) in Guilford CT | Dr. Gary Price As the seasons change and with the holidays just around the corner, now is the perfect time to consider an eye lift!

The march of Father Time, genetics and exposure to the sun’s rays work to cause the lids of your eyes to droop and unsightly bags to form under your eyes.

Droopy eyelids and under eye bags are major reasons women and men alike are considering eye lift surgery or blepharoplasty. A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure which tightens and removes excess upper and lower eyelid skin, muscle and sometimes fat for a more alert and youthful appearance. Although it’s most commonly done as a cosmetic procedure, a blepharoplasty may correct the interference droopy eyelids can cause with your vision.

Your blepharoplasty will be done under general anesthesia, as an outpatient procedure, where Dr. Price will take every precaution for your safety and comfort.

During the procedure, small incisions are made in the natural creases of your upper eyelid. Excess skin and fat are removed and the incisions are closed. For the lower lids, incisions are made under the lashes or inside your eye. These tiny incisions will be completely invisible once healed.

Consider a blepharoplasty if:

  • You have excess skin which covers the natural fold of your eyelids
  • You have puffy bags under your eyes
  • You have loose skin which hangs down from your eyelids and covers your lashes

What about the recovery process?

  • Expect your eyes to be swollen and bruised following surgery. This is normal and will subside.
  • You may experience some pain and blurred vision.
  • Applying ice packs can soothe the pain and control any inflammation.
  • You should be able to return to work within two weeks.
  • Walking is recommended in the early phase of your recovery…but take it easy!
  • Heavy lifting and exercise is not recommended for several weeks after surgery. Avoid any exercise that requires you to bend over, such as yoga.
  • The final results of your procedure will be visible within a month.

Say Hello Crisp, Cooler Weather…Get Your Skin Ready For Fall!

Skin Care in Guilford CTSummer is winding down…here comes fall!

This is the time of year you change your wardrobe, re-arrange your closet, polish up your favorite boots and, hopefully, switch up your skin care routine.

Just because you’ll be dressed in sweaters and jeans for the next few months doesn’t mean you can take a skin care break. Your skin deserves loving care all year long!

As temperatures drop, the air becomes drier and your skin may lose precious moisture. Fall is the perfect time to exfoliate and moisturize your skin…to counteract the damage chlorine, salt water and sun may have taken on your skin.

As you transition the seasons, here are a few skin care tips:

Switch from harsh soaps to cleansers – Soapy scrubs and gels feel wonderful after a day at the beach, but they can leave your skin dry. Switch to a soap-free hydrating cleanser or a creamy body wash.

Exfoliate to hydrate – Although you may think that exfoliation would make skin drier, exfoliation is actually the best way to treat parched, flaky skin. Introduce a face or body scrub once or twice a week. Oil-based scrubs are especially good because they exfoliate and hydrate.

Switch to creams – Brisk weather can mean biting winds. Lightweight lotions may be fine for summer, but when the weather changes, creams provide a stronger oil barrier. The barrier reduces water loss from the outer layer of skin and provides hydration at the same time.

Don’t forget sunscreen – You may not be spending time at the beach, but that doesn’t mean you can forget sunscreen for the next 6 months. Sunscreen is a daily essential, so don’t set it aside.

Keep your lips kissing soft – Moisturize now to prevent dry, cracked lips this winter. Use a non-petroleum based lip balm for best results.

Remember your hands – Hands can become chapped, dry and cracked during fall and winter. Prevention is the buzz word. Begin moisturizing now to keep your hands soft and supple all winter long.

And don’t forget your feet – Your feet are going to be stuck inside your boots and winter shoes for months to come. Make it a rule to continue taking care of them and exfoliating them on a regular basis, and you’ll have no problem slipping into your sandals when the time comes.

Call for a consultation appointment, today, and transition beautifully into fall!  (203) 453-6635

DON’T FRET…WE HAVE YOUR WRINKLES COVERED!

Wrinkle treatment in guilford ct Time marches on and your aging skin marches right along with it.

Getting older is definitely challenging for men and women of a “certain age,” as the aging process brings with it thinner, less elastic skin, which is much more vulnerable to wrinkles.

The Sun is great for Vitamin D but not so great for your face!

  • The harmful UV rays of the sun are one of the main causes of wrinkles. How does this happen? The sun’s UV rays break down your skin’s connective tissues and wrinkles are the result. More importantly, repeated, unprotected sun exposure can cause skin cancer. Keep inn mind that the affects of the sun’s damaging rays are cumulative over your lifetime.

Wrinkles first appear around the eyes, between the brows and around the mouth.

  • Why? Repeated facial expressions, such as frowning and smiling eventually result in wrinkles.

Keep that smile but try not to worry so much! Those frown lines don’t need extra help to deepen.

Taking care of your skin, at every age, is critical, and there are some things you can do to protect it against the wrinkling that time may bring.

  • Stay indoors during the time of day when the sun’s rays are at their most damaging, between noon and five p.m.
  • Buy a 30 SPF sunscreen that protects against the UV and UVB rays of the sun and use it. Re-apply it often, and don’t forget your hands and neck.
  • Use eye cream and a good facial moisturizer; a retinol cream applied daily may reduce the appearance of fine lines.
  • If you smoke, quit. Smoking accelerates the aging process and causes wrinkles to appear prematurely.
  • Don’t scrub, rub or pull at your skin; be gentle. Use an easy touch when applying makeup, especially around the eye area.
  • Botox, Injectable dermal fillers and chemical peels are treatments to consider if your wrinkles are deep and pronounced.

Are You Gauging the Damage Caused By Your Gauges?

Ear Surgery in New Haven County & Guilford CTPierced ears are popular, that’s a fact.

However, there can be a downside, especially to the extreme piercing style known as Gauges, which found fashion popularity in the late 90’s.

Your decision to join a band, complete with gauging your ears seemed very cool, right? Right.

Then when you found you were getting lots of negative attention and couldn’t get a job, reality set it. You wanted your normal lobes back.

  • Gauges are not simple ear piercings. They create holes that can be large and disfiguring when the gauges are removed. It is possible for the holes to shrink if they are small, but larger holes need plastic surgery to close them and reshape the earlobe.

Perhaps one of these scenarios is all too familiar:

  • You’ve worn very large, heavy earrings for many years and the shape of your earlobes has drastically changed…to floppy and unflattering.
    • Earlobe reconstruction surgery can restore earlobes that have become stretched through many years of wearing heavy earrings.
  • You’re holding a baby on your lap when she grabs at your newest, shiniest pair of dangling ear bling and before you know it, she has ripped the earring out of your ear.
    • Earlobe tears may be complete or partial; both can be easily reconstructed.

Earlobe repair is a fairly short, simple procedure involving removal of the skin between the tears in the lobe and closing the repair with tiny sutures.

  • Dr. Price specializes in repairing torn or disfigured earlobes and those that have had ear gauges removed.
  • His goal is to provide the patient with normal-looking lobes.
  • The surgery is usually done in under an hour in our offices under local anesthesia. There is no down time. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately.
  • If you decide to re-pierce your ears, however, we recommend you wait at least six weeks following reconstructive surgery.

The results of earlobe reconstruction surgery are gratifying and amazing.

Call today at (203) 453.6635 for a consultation with Dr. Price. You ears will thank you!

Your Tummy Tuck and You

Tummy Tuck in Guilford CT & New HavenYou may be considering a tummy tuck because you have had a child or children and want to take care of the excess, loose tummy skin that remains.

Deciding to have a “tummy tuck” or abdominoplasty is a serious decision…one that you have undoubtedly read about, thought about or may have discussed with a relative or friend who has had one of her own.

If you are in good health and are physically fit, you may not have excess fat.

But not even that extra daily work out can improve the widening of your abdominal muscles or the loose, baggy skin that comes with childbirth.

Does being physically fit impact your surgery?

  • Being physically fit won’t necessarily shorten a normal recovery time, but the more healthy and fit you are the faster your recovery will be.
  • Your body may not actually heal faster than those of a patient who is sedentary and overweight, but you will more likely be back to your normal activities sooner.
  • Your physical fitness, emotional stability, positive attitude and having a good support system are all factors that can aid in your recovery from surgery. But be cautious about getting back to ‘working’ those abdominal muscles too soon.
  • The healthier you are definitely makes you a ‘better’ surgical candidate. This is especially true for reducing any potential risks of anesthesia and surgery. Additionally, if you are in good cardiovascular shape and close to your ideal body weight, you should recover from your surgery very well.
  • Patients who aren’t fit might experience potential side effects or complications that may prolong recovery time.
  • You should never exceed your doctor’s guidance in an effort to speed recovery. Your body will heal the way it will heal…and you shouldn’t push harder to make your healing go faster.

Listen to and believe in

your unique body – it will tell you when you are pushing yourself too hard following surgery.

Dr. Price loves highly motivated patients who keep themselves in good physical condition.
