Common Questions about Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the most common plastic surgery procedure, with more than 300,000 surgeries performed every year in the United States. And the reasons go beyond just wanting a larger size. Often women are concerned about the shape and desire to make both breasts symmetrical, or they want to replace a breast removed for medical reasons. If you are considering this life-changing procedure, here are a few common questions you will discuss during your consultation:

Which breast implant is best for me?

There are three common types of breast implants. Silicone gel implants consist of a medical-grade silicone gel, which has the benefit of feeling more like natural breast tissue. Saline implants also have a silicone outer shell, but they are filled with sterile saline water. Another option is IDEAL implants, which combines the natural feel of silicone gel with saline inside.

Should I also consider a breast lift?

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and weight gain and/or loss can impact the shape of breasts and cause them to sag, which is why a breast lift may be recommended in tandem with breast augmentation. This procedure removes excess, sagging skin and changes the position of your breasts to improve the overall results of the implant surgery. Breast augmentation and breast lift are also part of an all-encompassing, increasingly popular procedure called a “Mommy Makeover,” which includes liposuction and tummy tuck.

Where will the incisions be made?

Implants are placed through one of three incision locations, and Dr. Price will help you understand the benefits of each option and which one may be best for you. The most popular choice, inframammary incisions are made just above the crease on the underside of the breast, which means the scar will be hidden beneath a bra or bikini top. Periareolar incisions are made just below the areola, which is the dark skin surrounding the nipple, and as these incisions are nearly invisible once healed. Transaxillary incisions are made in the armpit, which leaves no scarring on the breast.

Skincare Secrets from a Plastic Surgeon

Skincare Advice from a Professional

The skin is widely regarded as the largest organ in the human body. It comes into contact with the sun, pollution, bacteria, and more. You know it needs extra care to keep it looking its best but what are the steps or products I absolutely need to be using? Here are some simple skin care tips from a professional to keep your skin looking younger and healthier.

First of all, always remove your makeup. No matter how tired you are! Effectively removing makeup is the key to clearer, healthier skin. When you remove your makeup, you give your skin a clean canvas for other skincare products. We recommend a gentle cleansing oil or wash as a first step to removing makeup. When it comes to skincare steps, it’s best to remember to layer products from thinnest to thickest. This means anything you use between cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.

Your diet affects the health of your skin. This shouldn’t come as a surprise but what you eat, does impact your overall skin health. Limiting dairy products and sugar is recommended for clearing up breakouts and other skin issues. Eating nutrient-rich vegetables, fruits, and whole grains are recommended for healthy skin.

The most important piece of advice is to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen. If nothing else, make sure you’re wearing sunscreen every day, year-round, not just in the summer or when you know you’ll be spending time outside. Broad-spectrum sunscreens are designed to protect your skin from ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, which can cause direct and indirect cell and DNA damage. This cell and DNA damage impacts collagen, pigment, and cell reproduction which results in signs of aging including lines, discoloration, and an overall unhealthy appearance. Sunscreen also can prevent skin cancers. Don’t forget to reapply throughout the day too, no matter the weather.

With so many different skin types and skin goals, it’s hard to diagnose a “one size fits all” regimen, if you’d like a skincare routine tailored to you, give us a call and schedule a consultation with us today (203) 453-6635.

Myths About Abdominoplasties

Tummy Tuck Guilford CT Abodminoplasties or tummy tucks remain one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures to date. By removing excess skin and fat, and tightening muscles, a tummy tuck is one of the only ways that you can get your pre-baby body or post weight loss body back. To help you determine whether or not an abdominoplasty is worth looking further into, we have created a list debunking some common myths about this surgery.

Myth 1: Tummy Tucks are a weight loss procedure

One of the most common myths that we hear about tummy tucks is that they are a weight loss procedure, but that’s not the case. A tummy tuck is primarily used to help get rid of and tighten loose skin. Although we may remove a small amount of fat at the same time, it’s definitely not a procedure that we can even consider to be for weight loss.

Myth 2: The Scars Are Scary

Yes, scars are scary, but having scarring from a tummy tuck doesn’t have to be. In fact, one of the things that Dr. Price prides himself on is the ability to hide the scar so that they can be covered by underwear or a bikini bottom. Additionally, we also encourage our patients to follow scar care treatment after surgery to help minimize the appearance and make it look a lot more subtle.

Myth 3: It’s not safe to get pregnant after a tummy tuck

We understand that life happens. If you get pregnant after undergoing a tummy tuck, it won’t be harmful to you or your baby, but it’s not something we recommend. Although a tummy tuck is a safe procedure and won’t affect your pregnancy, your skin will stretch out again, and you will probably need another surgery after you have your baby.

Are you ready to get the abs that you’ve been wanting? If so, contact our Guilford office today and call us at (203) 453-6635.

3 Things to Never Do After Blepharoplasty

Loose, excess skin around your eyes can make you look tired and in some instances may even make it difficult for you to see clearly. Additionally, they can lead to cosmetic concerns like having bags underneath your eyes, which is nobody’s idea of a good time. One of the specialties that Dr. Price focuses on is upper and lower blepharoplasty.

Although these surgeries are different, the recovery for them can be similar. Let’s take a closer look at a few things that you should never do after getting blepharoplasty.

Don’t Wear Contact Lenses

You may hate the look of yourself in glasses, but they are going to be your best friend for the first two weeks after blepharoplasty. Not only will you not want to touch your eyes while they’re healing after surgery, but you also don’t want to put anything in them. Wearing your glasses can help with the temptation. Wait at least two entire weeks or until Dr. Price gives you the go-ahead.

Don’t Sleep Flat

For the first few days after surgery, you should stay home and try to get as much rest as possible. Because your body will be healing, it’s essential that you give it all for the time that it needs. Although you may normally like to sleep flat on your back, that’s the ultimate no-no when recovery from blepharoplasty. Because you will have a lot of swelling around your eyes, it’s important that you sleep with your head elevated. By raising your head, you can help fluid drain and prevent the swelling from getting worse.

Don’t Exercise

Being big into fitness is good for your heart, lungs, blood sugar, and waistline, but it’s not ideal for you when you’re recovering from a surgery like a blepharoplasty. Working out may exacerbate the eyes and incisions and cause an infection. Additionally, your body needs as much downtime as possible. If you absolutely have to get up and get moving, try going on a short, slow walk around the block.

If you want to learn more about the do’s and don’ts of blepharoplasty, contact our Guildford office and call (203) 453-6635.

3 Surgeries to Get Now That The Kids Are Back In School

In between packing lunches, going back-to-school shopping, registering your kids for school, and dropping them off on their first day, there are some things that you may want to consider doing for yourself once your kids are back in school. Now that you have a whole lot of free time on your hands, why not get some elective surgeries done that you’ve wanted to get?

Breast Augmentation

If you breastfeed your kids, then you probably lost a lot of volume in your breasts. During a breast augmentation, we will place implants under your natural breast tissue to help enhance your breasts and give you a sexier look. If your breasts have also lost elasticity, we can also perform a breast lift in conjunction with a breast augmentation so that your breasts sit higher on your chest as they did pre-baby.

Liposuction

All of the stress of raising kids can make it hard for you to get rid of stubborn fat (especially around your abdomen). If you are having a hard time reaching your weight loss goals, then it may be time to get liposuction. As one of the most effective body contouring procedures, liposuction works by surgically removing unwanted fat from the body to give you a slimmer appearance.

Fillers and Botox

Although fillers and Botox don’t take much time to get done, they can be hard to take the time to do when you are chasing kids around. Botox and fillers can help correct a variety of different cosmetic issues, including a loss of volume, fine lines, and wrinkles. Depending on what your skin concerns are, we may recommend a combination of the two or we may be able to get away with just using one.

With your kids back in school, you will have some extra time to rest, recover, and recuperate after any one of these procedures. To learn more or to schedule your consultation, contact our Guilford office at (203) 453-6635.

Myths About Lip Fillers That Aren’t True

Having fuller lips is one of the most popular trends right now in our industry. By using a filler like Restylane, we can add volume to your lips to give you that sexier pout that will make you feel better in your skin. But, if you are like many people, you may be hesitant because you don’t want to look like a real housewife. To help you land on a decision about fillers that’s right for you, let’s debunk a few common myths about them.

Myth 1: They Look Fake

The good news about filler is that they shouldn’t make you look like you had work done unless you want it to. Here at our office, Dr. Gary J Price uses a variety of techniques to ensure that your lip fillers look as natural as possible. During your consultation, Dr. Price will go over the results that you want and then try to mimic them so that you get exactly what you want.

Myth 2: People will be able to tell

If you add a lot of volume to your lips all at once, people will probably be able to tell. But, if Dr. Price makes a few injections around your lips to make them slightly fuller, then nobody even has to notice. One thing we do tell or patients though is that your lips may be swollen for up to a week after you get injections depending on how your body reacts to them.

Myth 3: Injections Are Only For People With Thin Lips

Not everybody has to be Kylie Jenner to justify getting lip injections. Although fillers are great at adding volume to your lips, they can also be used to treat things like asymmetry, enhance your cupids bow, or add a little bit more definition that you’ve wanted to have.

Lip fillers are one of those things that are practically magic. The best thing about them is that they not only work, but they will give you immediate results. If you want to learn more about lip fillers or if you want to schedule your consultation appointment, contact our Guildford office today and call us at (203) 453-6635.

Mommy Makeover Vs. Liposuction

Liposuction and Mommy MakeoverHaving a slim body is something that most of us want, but that many of us don’t have. Even though eating healthily and working out regularly can help you get to an ideal weight, it doesn’t’ always do the trick. In fact, a lot of people have a hard time getting rid of the last 10-15 lbs on their own, which is why body contouring procedures like liposuction have started to gain more and more popularity. But, even though liposuction is still really popular, a new type of method has taken the industry by storm: the mommy makeover. As two different procedures that give you great options, some patients aren’t’ sure how to determine the difference between a mommy makeover and liposuction. Let’s take a closer look.

Liposuction

Liposuction is ideal for patients who have a little bit of stubborn fat to get rid of. During this surgical procedure, we will make small incisions in the skin, scrape off excess fat, and then suction it out with a vacuum-like device called a cannula. Whether you want to get rid of fat on your upper arms, abdomen, buttocks or thighs, liposuction gives patients real, long-lasting results.

Mommy Makeover

The unique thing about a mommy makeover is that it combines a variety of different procedures into (usually) one surgery. Typically, patients choose from liposuction, a tummy tuck, a breast lift, and breast augmentation. If you feel like you not only want to get liposuction done, but you also want to tighten the skin on your abdomen or enhance your breasts, then a  mommy makeover may be the way to go. During your mommy makeover consultation, we will discuss all of the options that you have and then create a customized surgical plan to give you the results that you want.

Whether you get liposuction or liposuction in conjunction with other surgeries as part of the mommy makeover, you really can’t go wrong. To learn more about both of these surgical options, contact our Guilford office today and call us at (203) 453-6635.

How to Treat a Sunburn While On Vacation

Treating SunburnGoing on a beach vacation is just about everyone’s idea of the perfect summer. If you have big plans to get to the beach and soak up some rays, don’t forget the sun protection. Even though SPF can protect your skin from skin cancer and sunburns, it’s not bulletproof. So, what can you do if you get a sunburn while you’re on vacation? Let’s take a closer look.

Skip the Sun

No, you don’t have to sit inside of your hotel room and mope if you have a sunburn, but we don’t encourage you to lay out in the sun either. Try to sit in the sade and wear some clothes to cover your sunburn. Remember that even though you might have to take a timeout for a few days, you will be healed up and back at it in no time.

Bring Aloe Vera

In addition to packing enough sunscreen with you on vacation, we always encourage our patients to bring a small thing of aloe vera. The acid in aloe vera has been proven to heal the skin a lot faster and soothe it. One of the great things about aloe vera is that a little bit of it can go a long way so you don’t have to haul a massive bottle with you on the airplane.

Try some ice or damp washcloths

Feel your sunburned skin. Does it feel hot to the touch? Burns tend to feel warm when you touch them. Try cooing your skin down with either something like an ice cube or a damp, cold washcloth. Both of these options will help soothe your skin and get rid of all of the heat. Plus, who doesn’t like to be cooled down when it’s scorching outside?

Calm down your skin after a sunburn and use these tips. If you want to learn more about how you can take better care of your skin during the summer, contact our Huntington office and call us at (631) 423-1000.

Ditch Your Lash Extensions and Try Latisse

Lash Extensions | Gary J. Price M.D.Big lashes are all the rage right now in the beauty industry, and we are no stranger to seeing all the new trends. But what if we told you that you could get similar looking results naturally with Latisse? Latisse is a prescription strength treatment that helps to strenthen, add volume, and lenghten your eyelashes over a few months. So, why should you trust us and ditch your extensions for this Latisse?

It looks more natural

Your eyelashes are going to look a lot more natural with Latisse because, well, they are natural. Rather than looking like some spiders took over your lashline, Latisse will give you that naturally defined look that you’ve been wanting.

You won’t have to wear liner or mascara

If you love your lash extensions because you can wake up every morning without putting on mascara or eyeliner, then you will love Latisse. After several months of using Latisse, you will notice that your lashes are so thick and full that it looks like you are wearing makeup.

You won’t have to get them filled

How often do you have to get your lashes filled? With Latisse, you don’t have to worry about scheduling appointments and taking time out of your day to get your lashes done. Instead, all you have to do is apply it to your lashline once a day, and you are good to go.

It strengthens lashes

One of the things that a lot of patients complain about when it comes to lash extensions is that they weaken their natural lashes. Lash extensions (especially the strips), can weigh your lashes down and make them too heavy, but Latisse actually strengthens your lashes so that they are stronger.

It’s more affordable

Although the cost of Latisse is a little bit expensive at first, it will save you money in the long run. Think of all of the money that you spend every few weeks having to get your lashes filled and then think about what you can do with that money now that you’re using Latisse!

To get your prescription for Latisse, come into our Guilford office today and call us at (203) 453-6635.

3 Tips to Help Speed Up Your Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast Augmentation RecoveryThe last thing that you want to do when it’s nice and warm outside (like it is now) is to be stuck in bed recovering from a breast augmentation. If you can’t wait to get outside to show off your new breasts in a swimsuit, then we have a few tips to get out of your bed and at the pool a whole lot sooner.

Massage

After you get a breast augmentation, it’s natural for your body to respond to the new implants by forming scar tissue around them, but we always encourage our patines to massage their breasts to get rid of that scar tissue. Getting rid of the scar tissue will also help your breasts feel less painful and will help speed up your recovery. To massage them, try to pull the implant away from the muscles and massage it from side to side. Repeat this a few times a day.

Take NSAIDs

Once you get rid of a lot of the tenderness and swelling, you will feel like getting out of bed and getting outside. Try taking some over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen or Motrin a few times a day or until the swelling subsides.

Wear the Compression Bra

We know that compression bras aren’t the sexiest piece of lingerie that you’ll ever own, but it may be the most beneficial. Make sure that you wear your compression bra every day for the first week or two to help get rid of any swelling.

Getting rid of the swelling and tenderness in your breasts can take a couple of weeks, but the sooner you can find some relief, the sooner you can show off your new breasts. To learn more about breast augmentation recovery tips, contact our Guilford office and call us at (203) 453-6635.
